What is a Kundli and what can it tell you?

A Kundli is a map of the sky at the exact moment you were born. Here is how it is made, what its parts mean, and how to read it wisely.

A snapshot of the sky at your birth

In Vedic astrology (Jyotish), a Kundli — also called a Janam Kundli or birth chart — is a diagram of where the Sun, the Moon and the planets were at the exact moment and place of your birth. Because the sky changes every few minutes, no two Kundlis are exactly alike.

To create one, you need three things: your date of birth, your exact time of birth and your place of birth. The time is especially important — even a difference of a few minutes can change the rising sign and the houses.

The building blocks of a Kundli

  • ✦Lagna (Ascendant) — the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It shapes your personality and how you approach life.
  • ✦Twelve houses (bhavas) — each represents an area of life: self, family, siblings, home, children, health, partnership, transformation, fortune, career, gains and losses.
  • ✦Nine grahas — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. Their positions in signs and houses tell the story of the chart.
  • ✦Moon sign (Chandra rashi) — the sign the Moon occupied. In Vedic astrology it describes your mind and emotions, and it is used for many predictions.
  • ✦Nakshatra — one of 27 lunar mansions the Moon was in. Your birth star influences temperament and is used for naming and matching.

Dashas: the timeline of your life

One of the most valuable parts of Vedic astrology is the dasha system. The Vimshottari dasha divides life into planetary periods, each lasting several years. The planet ruling a period — and its condition in your chart — colours the themes of that time.

This is why two people with similar charts can have very different experiences in the same year: they may be running different dashas.

What a Kundli can — and cannot — tell you

A Kundli highlights natural strengths and tendencies, areas that may need more effort, and periods that are favourable for particular kinds of decisions. Many people use it for guidance on career, marriage timing, compatibility and remedies.

It is not a fixed script. Traditional astrology sees the chart as describing tendencies and timing, while your own choices and efforts still matter. A Kundli is best used as a guide for reflection — not as a reason to stop taking responsibility for decisions, or as a substitute for medical, legal or financial advice.
